Job Title: District Manager
Type of Position: Permanent Full Time
Location: Chicago, IL; Hartford, CT; Pittsburgh, PA; Baltimore/Washington DC; Buffalo, NY; Albany, NY; Delaware; Atlanta, GA; and South Carolina

Badger Daylighting is currently seeking managers for operations in Chicago, IL; Hartford, CT; Pittsburgh, PA; Baltimore/Washington DC; Buffalo, NY; Albany, NY; Delaware; Atlanta, GA; and South Carolina areas

Location:  Based in a territory which has ability to keep a minimum of three trucks busy. Normally based out of the employee’s residence until business growth requires more support.  Units are located at a suitable, secure storage area.

Summary:  Reporting to the Regional Manager, responsible for developing, managing and growing Badger’s business in the assigned territory.

Major Duties include:

  • Grow/establish Badger’s business in the assigned territory Eastern Region at an aggressive pace ensuring the foundation is built for long term success.
  • Determine the most attractive market segments and customers based on the value of our service.  Develop a strong relationship with these customers creating repeat revenue for the District. Continue to expand the need for Badger’s Hydrovac services through education, awareness and market development to provide sustained growth.
  • Develop Operators in the District who are professional, hard working, knowledgeable, dependable and self sufficient.  Ensure the Operators have the necessary training, follow up with their quality of work, and that they display the appropriate Badger image.
  • Ensure the region is profitable by adding value when making decisions on cost.
  • Ensure the fleet management program is carried out in the District and set up the necessary supplier relationships to keep the trucks in good working order.
  • Ensure compliance to Badgers safety and high service standards in the District.

Detailed Responsibilities (to be delegated when it makes sense)

1. Operations Responsibilities

  • Hiring, supervising and training employees
  • Motivate employees to complete tasks proficiently and safely
  • Job site visits for bidding, inspections and pre job preparation
  • Bid and estimating on projects
  • Facilitate dispatching of units
  • Negotiate union challenges if required
  • Control spending
  • Minimize repair costs
  • Ensure good truck utilization
  • Hire, train, and manage essential Badger personnel
  • Source suppliers for repairs and maintenance

2. Marketing Responsibilities

  • Develop strong customer service skills with Badger’s personnel
  • Prospecting – Prioritize and develop contacts
  • Identify the key people and decision-makers within each company
  • Develop relationships with key personnel
  • Identify customers excavation needs and then prioritize
  • Identify new applications for Hydrovac services
  • Maintain customer accounts on an ongoing basis, provide assistance regarding overdue accounts
  • Educate the construction industry and safety organizations

Administration Responsibilities

Daily

Dispatching, bid assistance, pre qualification forms

Weekly

Collect field tickets, pre-trip and pre-job safety reports, productivity information
Monitor inventory of various truck components, repair and maintenance expenses
Identify immediate job opportunities

Monthly

Marketing reports, operations report, safety meetings, new hire orientations, drivers abstracts, incident reports, maintenance reports.

What to look for in a District Manager

This position requires flexibility and a willingness to be creative as sometime requires unusual actions to get the job done.  Knowing what decisions can be made and that they are accountable for them will give the manager a great sense of empowerment and therefore enhanced performance.

Some of the key qualities to look for in a District Manager include:

  • Organized – enables him to work efficiently.  Helps to understand key priorities and maximizes use of time
  • Self directed – must be self motivated, able to work on their own and be proactive
  • Business minded – a general business background and understanding of marketing, accounting and human resources are important. 
  • Flexible – the hydrovac industry and Badger are both dynamic and require constant changes and adjustments in response to issues and developments
  • Energetic – Positive constant enthusiasm helps keep the Agents, employees and customers on track.
  • Commitment/dedication – Need to have the company’s interests top of mind and be willing to travel, put in long hours and work 7 days a week if necessary.
  • Creative – You can count on the fact not everything will go according to plan.  Will need to come up with solutions to a myriad of problems with limited time or resources.  Need to learn things quickly and apply them to Badger’s business model.
  • Experience – helpful to understand the regulatory environment, customers, contacts and opportunities in Badgers target markets.
  • Business ethics – Has a high moral standard and practices good business ethics.

Key capabilities proven through experience

  • Market development.  Can look at a market and identify best long opportunities for Badger.  Is comfortable in dealing with project managers, superintendents, foremen and equipment operators.
  • Customer satisfaction.  Has had experience developing customer relationships and repeat business.
  • Operational expertise.  Is comfortable with construction operations, hiring and developing good operators and has some mechanical expertise.
  • Entrepreneurial. Has the ability to understand how a good business develops and looks for ways to improve it.
